Must Read Stories Of The Week

Work Must Reads

1/ The Future of Work Re-Engineered 👩‍💻 - How work has to be rethought to be made better, including removing just the two-tier system "individual contributor vs manager" and reviewing the c-suite members.

Why there needs to be more than IC and Management in career tracks

Focus

2/ How To Build Smaller Optimised Business Departments aka “Units” 👏- Why squads, swarms, tribes and SWATS can change your business and the things you have to consider (btw includes a free checklist)

3/ The Economics of Airbnb 🏝 - Airbnb had to grow in 2020 and 2021, 2021 into 2022 has been a successful period but importantly can Airbnb move away from short rentals into long rentals and make their hosts more money ($13k p/a average wouldn't be enough for most). Airbnb have a hard fight and likely will struggle outside of the US and local holidaying.

4/ The Incredible History Of Insulin 💉- A 26 minute listen on the importance of insulin over the last century and saving of millions of lives and why theft of the idea is key to it’s discovery in 1921. In the health tech space diabetes medicines and treatment is key to finding out longer life treatments and benefits. FWIW those with diabetes actually outlive those without (Source: Eric Verdin, president of the Buck Institute for Research

5/ Big Tech’s Main Enemy 🥊 -  Margarethe Vestager is someone many do not know, she is how the VP of the European Commission and is on a mission to hold big tech accountable for their actions, their questionable businesses (tax plays) practices and importantly lack of responsibility, Margarethe is leading the way on fighting back again big tech and monopoly behaviours.

6/ Language Has Nuance 👏- I loved this behind the scenes take by Trevor Noah on language and the pile on mentality of social media right now. Context and nuance of language matters!

7/ Luxury Shoe Repairs 👠 - Fascinating look at where celebrities and athletes go to to fix their luxury footwear, from their sneakers to their favourite Louboutin heels. A 2 year old business becoming famous from word of mouth and social media, shows you how important status items are even for celebrities.

Let’s BeReal. Because there’s a new platform doesn’t mean you have to leap on to post or to sponsor. Most often it’s to learn how it works, why it’s growing and what’s your play. BeReal had 7.9M DAUs in July that’s up from 2M in January. My recommended process for any new app or channel: Study it ➡️ Learn what it is and is not ➡️ Teach others in the team ➡️ Build the plan ➡️ Test the platform ➡️ Then ask: Do it better? Do it again?

Well Worth A Watch

We have finally worked out how to make it rain (London is definitely in need of rain!) but scientists are super sceptical.

Life Must Reads

8/ Do you like behind-the-scenes documentaries? Like All or Nothing Arsenal? (I know I binged it back to back) this BBC Sounds Podcast Moment of Truth is brilliant. Thanks to friend of Must Reads Adam for the recommendations.

9/ Charge Your Phone Overnight? 🥵- Here’s an interesting way to rethink charging your phone overnight and why the iPhone charging throughout the day might be a better way of improving your phones health.

10/ Do Spotify Create Artists To Keep Stream Fees? 🧐 A detailed TikTok video on if Spotify creates profiles and music and pack full of their own playlists so they don't have to pay artists? Sounds a likely growth hack, especially with the first artist being legit and then the majority of others not being. Platforms creating "art with ai' will likely come under backlash but are they doing something wrong? Like github creating a product that writes code for you...
